Art & Music Education at the Mount

  Career Potential

A Master of Arts degree in Art Education may lead to several career options, including

  • Multi-age art teacher (pre-school through high school)
  • Art school instructor
  • Artist-in-residence
  • Art supervisor
  • Cultural arts center instructor
  • Museum educator or docent
  • Private art teacher and
  • Senior center art coordinator

Professional musicians typically work in several areas of music, including teaching, performing and composing/arranging. These careers vary between employment at institutions such as schools, orchestras, publishing houses and in an entrepreneurial (self-employed/independent) arrangement. Many professional musicians find it beneficial to maintain contacts throughout the music, education and entertainment industries.

  Real-World Experience

Coupled with the field experiences built into the art education courses, students have opportunities to assist with summer art workshops for children, family art nights, and student art exhibitions. Membership in the Mount's Art Education Association and the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) facilitates a smooth transition from preparation to professional practice by promoting involvement in campus, regional, state and national art education activities. Ó£ÌÒɬ¸£Àû¼§ Art Education students regularly participate in the annual OAEA state conventions.

Our Music Education program prepares the student to be a productive and competitive music educator. When course work is completed, a provisional multi-age license (ages 3-21) is available through the School of Education. This certifies graduates to teach in private, parochial and public schools. Professional musicians who are active in the regional and national performance scenes, as well as in the international academic field guide students in their study of Music. A low student-to-faculty ratio sets the stage for valuable mentoring relationships.
